Your water in your shower may be to blame for your tangled, lifeless, lackluster, hard to manage health. Here's why a shower filter may benefit your hair health.
Calcium, Iron, and Magnesium while all essential minerals our bodies need internally, but aren't so good for our hair on the outside. These minerals can be the root cause of difficult to manage hair - hair that may tangle easy, is dryer, is prone to breakage, and may lay lifeless or be lackluster.
Topeka's water scores a pH value of 9.4 and it contains varying levels of calcium, chloride, magnesium, silica, sodium, sulfate, nickel, and potassium and of course lot of other stuff that isn't really great for your hair.
The general pH of hair is 3.67 and the scalp sits at around 5.5. That means that when we wash our hair, the water alone raises our hair's pH above it's normal level. Conditioner is meant to lower that pH back down since shampoo is also usually formulated at a higher pH than the hair and scalp. But conditioner may not be enough in some cases and that's where a shower filter comes in.
Shower filters are designed to neutralize the less than ideal hard water minerals, capture sediment, reduce chlorine, and some can even infuse the water with beneficial minerals and boost oxygen levels in the water for healthier hair and skin. You could install a whole house water filter, but for the sake of hair and beauty and the cost of such today, we'll just focus on an in shower filter - which is a cheaper and just as effective solution specifically for our hair and skin.
Here are the benefits for washing your hair with filtered water:
Reduce dryness and breakage
Unfiltered water exposes your hair and skin to minerals and chemicals that take away your hair's natural properties and raise the pH. Chemicals such as chlorine use strong oxidization that strips the hair shaft of it's protein and oils and these minerals and chemicals can build up in the hair, leading to breakage.
Easier to manage hair
Contaminants in the water can make hair difficult to manage causing tangles and hassles when styling. Water filters can lessen the struggle without adding additional time and money into your routine. Meaning, you may need less products than you thought.
Improves scalp health
Minerals and chemicals in water may trigger or contribute to dry, flaky scalps and other dermatitis issues. Mineral build up can also cause excess oil production which can worsen conditions like dandruff or scalp irritation.
Improve the effectiveness of your hair products
The buildup of mineral deposits on your hair can prevent your products from penetrating the hair shaft and scalp. Some chemicals found in the water, such as chlorine can dry your hair out which means your not getting any additional moisture from your conditioner, and your only getting back what you've lost from the chemicals. Water filters reduce the minerals that build up and the chemicals that block you from getting the right moisture.
Extend the life of your hair color and create less problematic
Hair color works by penetrating color molecules into the hair cuticle and bonding it to the hair cortex. Minerals and chlorine can build up on your hair over time and act as a barrier between coloring products and the hair cortex, reducing the ability for color to take, which is why sometimes in the salon we pre-treat hair before a color service. And after your color, unfiltered water can cause color to fade faster and cause unevenness - leading to dull or even brassy hair after a few washes and more trips to the salon for toners.
Filtered water will protect your hair color by keeping the hair shaft free of build up so the product fully penetrates during your service and will also extend the life of your color by reducing the minerals and chemicals that would typically break it down.
Saves you money
While I can certainly see you in the salon for treatments that address these concerns since I do have treatments and a filter on our shampoo bowl, and I could fully give you product recommendations that can fix any of the above concerns, what I WOULD LOVE MORE is you getting the proper at home hair care that saves you money and helps you have better hair. I want to see you have less breakage, longer lasting color, and to only have to see me when you need me most, and not have to spend extra money on more and more products to address your concerns.
SO GET THE WATER FILTER. YOUR SKIN AND HAIR WILL THANK YOU!
